Our Picks For Best Ellipticals of 2023
Sneak Peak of the Best Ellipticals:
The Best Ellipticals
1. Best Elliptical Overall: NordicTrack FS14i FreeStride Trainer
We’ve named the NordicTrack FS14i FreeStride Trainer as our best overall elliptical, because it has a bit of everything for everyone. It has a large 14” touch screen to stream iFit from, it has an adjustable 32” stride length, and it performs as three different machines. Plus, it has a large 375 lb weight capacity which should work well for most users.
The FS14i functions as an elliptical when you extend the pedals all the way forward and back, and when you shorten the stride a bit, it works like you’re walking or hiking on a treadmill. The pedals can even shorten to move just up and down to really work those glutes in a stair-stepper motion. You’ll really get a sweaty, full-body workout with this trainer.
To add to the burn factor, the FS14i FreeStride Trainer also inclines up to 10% and declines to -10%. This, on top of 26 levels of quiet magnetic resistance, and moveable handlebars, provides you with a versatile cardio workout at home.
On top of all of these high-quality features, iFit really enhances this machine. Take elliptical, hiking, walking, and even running classes on your NordicTrack FS14i Freestride Trainer, and never get bored with your workouts again. iFit adds on-demand classes regularly, and has plenty of content off the machine as well.
We love all that you get with this compact, sturdy hybrid elliptical trainer.

2. Best Elliptical For Bad Knees: Sole E95 Elliptical
The Sole E95 Elliptical is one of Sole’s most popular ellipticals with high quality components at a great price. We love the solid design and sleek pedal movement.
Sole’s E95 Elliptical is highly rated elliptical designed for home use, but it’s solid design rivals commercial equipment found in fitness centers. It’s quiet drive system is one of our favorite features; you get a smooth forward and reverse pedal motion that creates hardly any noise. The E95 has a heavy 27 pound flywheel, which makes the motion even throughout the pedal stroke. There is no heaviness on the backend since you are gently propelled by the flywheel.
The 20-inch maximum stride length is sufficient for most users. Oversized foot pedals are foam cushioned for comfort. Sometimes ellipticals can cause a bit of numbness in the toes since your foot stays in one position with no toe-off as in running. The cushioned pedals on the E95 are supportive underfoot with no discomfort or numbness after a long workout. This is we’ve named the E95 as the best elliptical for bad knees.
This elliptical weighs 236 pounds but will support a whopping 400 pounds! Power-adjustable incline with 20 levels and 20 levels of resistance combine to give you one heck of a challenging workout! Currently the E95 only has 10 preloaded programs and no additional content via a subscription option. But we love the feel and design of this quality machine!

5. Best Front-Drive Elliptical: NordicTrack 14.9 Elliptical
The premium model in NordicTrack’s lineup of front-drive ellipticals is the NordicTrack 14.9. The 14.9 performs and feels like a standard elliptical – the stride isn’t adjustable like the Freestride Trainers from the brand. The flywheel is positioned on the front of the machine under the console. So, the majority of the weight of the machine is under the console to keep it nice and steady.
The NordicTrack 14.9 also has a 32 lb flywheel which makes the elliptical feel really stable and secure. This is the ideal flywheel weight that we look for in ellipticals. That is why we’ve awarded the NordicTrack 14.9 Elliptical as the best front-drive elliptical among these other best elliptical machines.
Overall, the 14.9 Elliptical has a lot of functionality and training options packed into its hearty 210 lb design. It handles users up to 350 lbs so it will work for most, it also has oversized leveling feet to eliminate any rocking, although we’ve never had a problem with this on the 14.9. 7. Best Elliptical For Home Use: Sole E95S Elliptical
Sole’s E95S Elliptical is a top-end hybrid elliptical with stride length adjustment. It’s also our pick for the best elliptical for home use.
The E95S is a step up from it’s sister machine, the E95 with added features like adjustable stride length, a 38mm steel frame, and weight capacity of 400 pounds. This elliptical retails for a bit more than the E95 but you get what you pay for with added functionality.
This is a front-drive trainer with a generous 30 pound flywheel. The E95S is designed for heavier, more frequent use than the E95 so it is good for homes or small gyms with multiple users. The many adjustable features help support various size users. You get power adjustable stride length from 18” to 24” an adjustable console. and 20 levels of incline.
10 onboard programs come standard on Sole machines, and an included chest strap syncs directly to the console to support the two customizable heart rate programs for zone or heart rate training. The 9” LCD display has large, easy to read numbers and the handlebars offer multiple grips to activate different upper body muscles or support users of varying heights.
We are impressed with the design and solid frame on the E95S. A full, lifetime warranty reinforces the quality design, as Sole stands behind its machines. If you want a bit more features and adjustable control, take a look at the Sole E95S.

Similar to the E95, the foot pedals rotate both forward and backwards so you can activate different muscle groups and mix up your routine.

Once again, this is the highest weight capacity on our list. Users of all weights and sizes can enjoy the E95S with its impressive weight capacity!

8. Best Hybrid Elliptical: NordicTrack FS10i FreeStride Trainer
The NordicTrack Freestride FS10i Trainer is a multi-functional hybrid elliptical trainer with high quality components and enhanced functionality. It checks all the boxes for a great at home elliptical trainer.
The FreeStride pedal motion is unique, as you move your feet with the pedals, it really feels like you are gliding. As opposed to traditional treadmills that hold your foot in a horizontal plane, the Freestrider allows you to pull the pedal up or down as well as forward and aft. You have control of the movement.
The FreeStride also offers 32-inches of stride length so you have extra range as you glide on the pedals. This is nearly double the length of a standard elliptical! Power incline helps stimulate posterior chain muscles for a well-rounded (no pun intended) workout! The moving handlebars make it easy to engage upper body muscles as well.
In addition to quality design, the FreeStride Trainer includes access to iFit, with hundreds of class options to choose from! The full color 10” screen will display iFit classes and content, which is updated frequently so you won’t get bored or run out of training options. We love the Freestride Trainer for its advanced functionality, great content, and unique design!

Elliptical FeaturesSpec Overview
- 20 Lb. Effective Inertia-Enhanced Flywheel
The flywheel on the Freestride FS10i is hearty and smooth. Centered under the user’s body weight, the flywheel makes each pedal motion fluid
- SMR™ Silent Magnetic Resistance
SMR is NordicTrack’s signature resistance which is calibrated to provide maximum resistance with minimum noise, friction, and wear.
- Oversized Levelers and Cushion Pedals
Upright handlebars are well positioned and easy to hold. Pedals and handlebars are coordinated for synchronized motion. You can pedal forward or backward.
- Steel Frame and 375 Lb. User Capacity
We love this max user weight! 375lb indicates a strong, well-built machine. Ellipticals have to be sturdy and reinforced to hold that max user weight up off the floor throughout the workout. We are impressed with NordicTrack’s design and functionality.
- Transport Wheels
This is a heavy machine and so NordicTrack makes it easy to move with transport wheels under the front uprights. This way you can roll or slide the Freeslide Trainer when needed.
- 10” Smart HD Touchscreen with 30-Day iFit free with purchase
This is one area where NordicTrack excels! This screen displays iFit classes to keep you focused with engaging trainers and constantly updated content. The iFit subscription is free for 30 days so you can see if you enjoy and like the content before spending any money.
- Pivoting Integrated Tablet Holder
In addition to the smart screen, there’s also a tablet holder attached at the top of the console so you can see or listen to your device while working out.
- AutoBreeze™ Workout Fan
A workout fan in the console is super nice! There are multiple speed options so you get the right amount of air flow.
- OneTouch® Controls for both Incline and Resistance
Single touch buttons allow for easy transitions between incline and resistance levels. These are within easy reach on the console.
- 24 Digital Resistance Levels
24 digital levels is plenty! That level 24 feels like walking through mud, it will kick up your heart rate and torch some serious calories!
- Power Adjustable 0 – 10% Incline
One great thing about the Freestride Trainer is you get incline in addition to resistance. The 10% incline adds difficulty to any resistance level so you can work hard while still being low impact.

What to Look for when Buying an Elliptical Trainer
Flywheel
The weight of the flywheel affects how the elliptical feels and functions. Look for a flywheel of 20 pounds or heavier for top performance. The heavier flywheel creates a smooth motion through the stride.
Stride Length
Stride length should be modifiable for different users. Hybrid trainers have extended stride lengths for enhanced performance.
Folding/Storage
Some ellipticals will fold in half when not in use, which really clears up floor space. Most folding ellipticals have a slightly lighter frame. Other ellipticals may not fold, but many feature wheels under the front uprights so you can gently roll the machine out of the way when needed. Take a look at the options when considering folding and storage designs.
Upper Body Conditioning
Many ellipticals have moving arms that users can pull and push to engage upper body muscles. There should be coordination between stride and handlebars for synchronized motion.
Maximum User Weight
Look for a maximum user weight of 300lbs or more. This not only supports more users, it is also a good indication of elliptical design and durability.
Construction
Consider an elliptical that has durable metal or hardy resin parts. Thin plastic components, handlebars or pedals will break easier and crack when subjected to extreme temperatures or frequent use.
Drive Design
Ellipticals have either a front, center or rear drive design depending on wheel and motor placement. Rear drive ellipticals are generally more durable, while center and front drives tend to be more economical and sometimes fold up.
Warranty
Look for a product with a substantial warranty. This is a good indication of quality construction and company support.
Resistance
Pretty much all ellipticals offer several levels of resistance. Levels up to 20 or above provide a wide range of training options.
Incline
Some ellipticals offer incline in addition to resistance which compounds your conditioning by activating different muscle groups as you pedal. Working at an incline also stimulates higher calorie burn because it is more challenging.
Pre-loaded Programs
Most ellipticals come with a handful of standard, preloaded programs you can run on the machine, such as: Fat Burn, Hills, Intervals, etc. A range and variety of programs will provide more well-rounded fitness and keep you from getting bored.
Subscription Programs
Some newer machines also offer subscription programs that will load on your elliptical. These often include a trainer-led workout filmed in a studio class. Subscription options are often more fun and more engaging than the pre-loaded programs, but there is usually a monthly cost.
Heart Rate Control
An included heart rate strap that syncs to the console matrix is the best method of heart rate monitoring. EKG grips on the handlebars are also good, but these are typically less precise. Heart rate training allows you to find the right intervals for you personally.
Additional Features: Fans, Speakers, Bluetooth, Tablet Holder
Look for features that matter to you. Some ellipticals have fans, which is really nice when you are working hard. Speakers will play programming music and Bluetooth connectivity often allows users to sync their music to play through the elliptical speakers. Some ellipticals include a tablet holder for your phone or device so you can watch it while you workout.
There are lots of options when choosing a home elliptical trainer, so do some research to find the best one for you!
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good elliptical?
A good elliptical is one that you’ll use regularly. We look for ellipticals that have over 20lb flywheels, and with maximum weight capacities of 300lbs+. Having a solid build and warranty are also indicators that it is a good elliptical.
Does the elliptical burn belly fat?
Ellipticals provide low impact workouts that burn calories. It may help burn belly fat, but be aware that you can’t spot reduce fat from specific areas on your body and you must be in a calorie deficit to lose fat. This means that you have to burn more calories than you consume.
If you’re looking to get into shape, improve your endurance, and burn calories the elliptical is a great option.
Which elliptical is best for home use?
We’ve rated the NordicTrack FS14i FreeStride Trainer Elliptical as our top elliptical for home use. It performs as 3 different machines, so you can adjust your stride to move like an elliptical, treadmill, and stair-stepper to target even more muscles. It also has a 14” touch screen that is iFit compatible so you can stream from thousands of guided workouts filmed all over the world.
