How To Write a Fitness Blog Post

Whether you’re just starting a new fitness blog or looking for ways to improve your existing writing skills, we’ve got you covered. You’ll learn how to come up with interesting article ideas, outline your initial draft, and then craft it into a finished masterpiece.

  1. Come up with your article ideas
  2. Outline the first draft of your post
  3. Polish and format it to create a top-notch final version

This video outlines the three key stages or you can scroll down for our detailed step-by-step guide…

1 – Brainstorm Fitness Post Ideas

The first step is to brainstorm interesting fitness article ideas. You might already have a pre-defined content strategy, a list written down somewhere, or lots of ideas in your head. But if you don’t, then start by thinking about your audience

  • What will they be interested in?
  • What are their challenges?
  • Are there common questions that they ask you?

If you’re still not sure what to post on your fitness blog, then look at your email inquiries and social media comments for inspiration. If you’re guest posting for another fitness website, then look at which articles have performed the best on their site. Creating helpful blog posts on these topics will ensure that the audience loves the content.

Write down your blog topic ideas and then cross-reference them against search engine keyword volumes. You can use Keysearch, Google’s Keyword Planner or the Moz Keyword Explorer to learn which phrases people are searching for related to your topic.

2 – Draft a Fitness Blog Post Outline

Now let’s breakdown exactly how to write a fitness blog post that’s compelling and well-structured.

Once you’ve defined your topic, it’s time to outline and draft your article. Here’s an example fitness blog post structure that you can use…

Intro (50-100 words)

This section needs to capture the audience’s attention and give them a reason to keep reading.

Make it engaging by asking a question or opening with a fascinating fact. Summarise what the reader will learn so they can decide if it’s relevant to their needs.

Background (100-200 words)

This part is totally optional, but some topics will benefit from a little background info.

This is where you set the scene, talk about why you’re covering this particular topic, or why it’s relevant to your audience. If your blog post is themed around third party source info (such as a scientific study) then this is where you’d introduce and link to it.

Core Content (600+ words)

This section is where you really dive into the topic in detail. It’s the main body of your blog post, so is where you expand your key points.

If you’re talking about a particular exercise, then you might cover the benefits, correct form, progressions, and coaching points. If you’re discussing a type of training, then you could summarise the pros and cons, along with supporting references.

To help make it easy for your audience to read, we recommended breaking it up into at least three sub-sections of 200 words each. You can do this by dividing your post into logical steps, or theming each section around a key idea, concept, question, or learning.

Conclusion (200-300 words)

In this section you should restate what the reader has learned, give your opinion on the topic, and then provide a ‘call to action’ (such as ‘sign up here’, ‘download this’, or ‘contact us’).

Use this structure as a basis for your fitness blog posts (feel free to copy and paste the above as a template). Draft each section as a sub-title and then expand on each one in turn. It’ll help you to organise your thoughts and make it easier for your readers to consume your content.

Want an Example Blog Post Outline?

Well, this article is actually a prime example. It has a short intro, core content divided into ‘3 steps’, and then a conclusion.

We didn’t include any background info since we like to keep our ‘how to’ guides as simple as possible. But we could have included background on fitness bloggers who have great writing styles or some stats on writer’s block.

3 – Format & Polish Your Fitness Post

Once you’ve drafted your fitness blog post, the next step is to review and make edits. This will turn an ‘ok’ blog post into one that your readers (and search engines) will love.

Taking the time and effort to add the finishing touches makes a huge difference to the quality of your finished article. It can be tempting to skip this step (especially if you just want to get it published) but it’s worth spending the extra 10mins for a truly professional result.

Here are some points to consider when reviewing and editing your blog post…

  • Sense check – does the article make sense as a whole? Do your points flow logically? Cut anything irrelevant, or add linking sentences if needed.
  • Integrity check – if you want your fitness blog to be credible, then it’s important to maintain the integrity of your posts. So, check that your article communicates a well-balanced point of view, and cites authoritative scientific sources where appropriate.
  • Spelling & grammar – read it out loud word for word to catch any spelling or grammar errors.
  • Links – check that hyperlinks direct to the correct URL address, and open in a new tab (so you don’t funnel readers away from your site completely when they click through).
  • Formatting & images – break up the text into short paragraphs and add H2 headings as sub-titles. Use bold to highlight important words and make the post easy to skim. Bullet points and numbered lists will help readers digest info in bite-size chunks. Images and block quotes also help to break up text and communicate your points visually.
  • SEO – ensure your keyword or phrase from step #1 is included in your headline, URL (aka slug), a few times in the body copy, in an H2 sub-header, image alt tags, and meta description. If you use WordPress then the free Yoast plugin makes it super-simple to check off all these things and boost SEO.

Reviewing and editing your blog post will transform it from good to great. Completing this final step will ensure you’re producing high-quality content that’s valued by your readers.

Once you’re happy with the post, you’re ready to hit ‘publish’!
