Best Treadmill Accessories for Home Workouts

Gear You Might Need in Your Arsenal to Make Treadmill Training Even Better

  • Kaleigh Ray

Most days, I need only my running watch, my shoes, and the treadmill itself to get my indoor run done. However, there are days that I want a little more tech and a better experience. Treadmills can be quite the investment, but sometimes there are gaps in the features your treadmill offers. These accessories can improve your comfort and help you get the data you need out of every walk and run.

From simple treadmill essentials to high-tech gadgets, this list has it all. I’ve been a runner for over fifteen years, and these are the accessories I would consider if I were in the market for them. Keep reading to find my curated list.

Best Treadmill Accessories for Home Workouts

Best Treadmill Mat, 2025

We Want to Help You Find the Best Treadmill Accessories for 2025

You most likely don’t need every accessory on this list for your workouts. However, you might be training for a race and want a more accurate record of your speed, heart rate, or other metrics. You might be coming back from an injury and need a little assistance. Maybe all you need are the most basic accessories for a treadmill to get you started.

I designed this list to appeal to a wide range of walkers and runners. Instead of searching through pages and pages of treadmill accessory options, I’ve picked only the best from each category.

Why You Should Trust Us

At TRG, we’ve reviewed dozens of treadmills. Not only do we know what accessories make treadmill training better, we know which ones are actually compatible with popular treadmill brands. Our team also knows where treadmills tend to fall short, so we have accessory suggestions that can cure these treadmill weaknesses.

Editors Note: We’ve included a range of products that we personally use and others from brands we know and trust.

Best Treadmill Accessories of 2025 – Chosen by a Runner and Walker

While some of these products are geared more towards runners, many of them are great for walkers, too. There’s no speed limit required for these cool treadmill accessories.

What We Like:

  • Heavy-duty
  • 5-year warranty
  • Non-porous
  • Versatile
  • Great for a home gym

Areas For Improvement:

  • Heavy
  • More expensive than basic treadmill mats
There are tons of treadmill mats to choose from, but what I notice about most of them is how flimsy they are. If you tried to roll a fitness treadmill over them, they would dent, tear, and deform. Not these premium mats! Flooring Inc.’s rubber mats are durable and built to last.

We have very similar mats in our TRG studio, and they have held up really well. A flimsier mat would not be able to support the constant moving of heavy equipment around, like these rubber mats can. Though they are heavy and more expensive, I think the investment is more than worth it.

You can choose between two different mat thickness options: 8mm or ⅜”. I recommend the thicker option for durability, but the cost is higher, and you don’t get the same color options. A single mat is 4’ x 6’, but you can always go for more than one if you need them.

  • Dishwasher safe
  • 24 oz capacity

Areas For Improvement:

  • May not suit oversized cup holders or shallow treadmill storage
I love a giant water bottle, but I’ve never found a treadmill that is compatible with my half-gallon water bottle. Some treadmills have really small cup holders, and most fitness equipment, in my experience, is best for the standard cycling water bottle. This type of bottle is often called a bidon.

The Camelbak Podium bottle is an affordable version of this bottle. It comes in multiple colors and is dishwasher safe. It’s simple, but you really don’t need something fancy for your workout. One feature that this bottle has that’s important to me is the high-flow, self-sealing cap. When working out hard, you want a bottle that you can drink out of with the least disruption to your workout.

While the Podium Water Bottle works very well for most treadmills, there are cases where it might not be the best option. Some treadmills have very shallow cup holders with a shaky console, so this bottle may be too unstable. Additionally, if your treadmill has oversized cup holders, the Podium bottle may wobble around. Still, I think it’s one of the safest bets.

Areas For Improvement:

  • Does not store data
  • Not for swimming
One of the most frequent ways in which fitness equipment disappoints our audience is by not being compatible with Apple watches. Your heart rate from your Apple Watch often won’t broadcast to a treadmill. You will likely need a Bluetooth heart rate monitor if you care about this data, so why not choose a more accurate heart rate monitor, such as a chest strap?

The Garmin HRM 200 uses Bluetooth and ANT+ technology, which allows it to pair with most treadmills. Some treadmills only pair with 5kHz monitors (more on that below), so double-check your machine’s compatibility. The HRM 200 also pairs with apps like Garmin Connect, Zwift, and Strava.

Wrist-based heart rate sensors and treadmill EKG pulse grips are not generally considered the most accurate devices. If you are really dedicated to tracking your heart rate, a chest strap is considered superior, and I’ve had great success with Garmin heart rate monitors. In my opinion, the biggest drawbacks are the restrictive feeling and the potential for the strap to slip down.

I have a Garmin watch, which is what I typically use when I test treadmills. Yet, every now and then, I find a treadmill console that pairs with a heart rate monitor, just not mine. In those cases, that means it’s a 5kHz-compatible console. Polar is the top dog in that category and also provides very trustworthy monitors.

As a chest strap that uses ECG heart rate detection, the Polar H9 is an accurate monitor. It can be used in conjunction with treadmills and other exercise equipment. You can also use it for swimming thanks to its waterproof construction.

The H9 does not have storage built in. You have to pair it with another device to record your heart rate during your activity. In addition to 5kHz, the H9 is Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible, so it works with a wide range of devices.

Areas For Improvement:

  • Cord management could be better
  • Electronic angle adjustment would be nice

The Cycplus fan is designed for bike trainers and exercise bikes, but I have had a lot of fun using it when I’m running on the treadmill. Many treadmills simply do not have the fan strength to make running more comfortable in a stuffy room. This fan does the job and more.

At the start of my run, I don’t want a fan on full blast, but further into my run, I don’t want to pause my run to crank the fan speed up. The Cycplus Smart fan has a remote control, but it goes even further. The Smart Fan’s power and heart rate settings pair to your devices, and use your real-time workout metrics to adjust the fan speed.

Your treadmill size and position will determine which of the Cycplus fan’s two configurations is best. It can be attached to a height-adjustable post, or it can be angled in the minimal floor stand. I tend to use the taller stand for treadmill running, so it hits my torso.

I recommend using the Cycplus fan in conjunction with a heart rate monitor. You can then fine-tune the fan’s settings based on your heart rate zones in the free Cycplus app. This smart fan speeds up when you work harder and slows down during easier efforts, so you can concentrate on your workout.

Areas For Improvement:

Not everyone needs (or has the budget for) a fancy-schmancy fan. The DeerRun Treadmill Fan keeps things simple and relatively budget-friendly. It’s typically even cheaper than its listed MSRP. It’s small, and while that might sacrifice some of the power, it makes it easy to store and move around.

The DeerRun Treadmill Fan has three flexible legs that you can wind around the arms or crossbar of your treadmill. This design makes it suitable for many different treadmills. You can also use the legs as a phone stand when it is placed on a flat surface, meaning you can use this fan for more than just your treadmill training.

My only concern with this fan is that the battery could die while you are training if you forget to charge it or are training for a long time with it on full blast. The solution is to charge it while you are using it. If your treadmill has a USB charging port, then the DeerRun Treadmill Fan can charge with it! Just be careful of the cords.

I worked in a running shoe store for about three years, and I’ve been a shoe nerd for years. That said, it’s really hard to make a running shoe recommendation that works for everyone. It just doesn’t exist, but I think the Brooks Ghost (and its 17th iteration) is pretty close.

The Brooks Ghost is a neutral running shoe, meaning it works for most running gaits. The cushioning is not too plush but certainly very cushioned. Many people like the Ghost 17 for walking as much as for running. For running, it’s good for a wide range of workouts—easy runs, intervals, and long runs.

Let’s get to the more technical stuff. The Ghost 17 has a 36mm stack height in the heel and 26mm stack height in the forefoot, creating a 10mm heel-to-toe drop. It has a rubberized outsole and an EVA, nitrogen-infused midsole.

The men’s sizes range from 7 to 15 with widths of B (narrow), D (medium), 2E (wide), and 4E (extra wide). The women’s sizes range from 5 to 13 with widths of B (medium), D (wide), 2A (narrow), and 2E (extra wide).

What We Like

  • Complete maintenance kit
  • Compatible with NordicTrack machines
  • Step-by-step guide
  • Lubricant and cleaning materials

Areas For Improvement:

  • May not be compatible with all machines
Treadmills need maintenance—there’s just nothing to do about it. This kit is designed specifically for treadmills that need to be lubricated. Some treadmills come with pre-waxed belts or are slat belt treadmills. These machines do not require lubrication, but most treadmills do. I chose the NordicTrack Maintenance Kit because it’s a popular brand and includes everything you need.

The first step in lubricating your treadmill is making sure the deck is clean. If you have a lot of dirt and dust on your treadmill deck, applying lubricant to it could make it all stick together. This isn’t good for your treadmill motor or belt. This maintenance kit provides you with a belt cleaning solution and a cloth to wipe the deck down. I recommend this step for anyone who hasn’t cleaned their treadmill in a long time (or at all).

For the next step, you get three packets of lubricant. You only need one for each lubrication. Then, you also get an applicator to help you spread the lubricant more easily.

The last two thoughtful inclusions are two spare safety keys and a storage bag. The spare safety keys may not work for every machine. The storage bag ensures that you don’t lose anything, as this kit works for three treadmill lubricant applications.

  • 15-hour battery life
  • Apple Watch compatible

Areas For Improvement:

  • Some users reported issues with connectivity and accuracy
  • Sticker adherence may be annoying
Why would you need a treadmill sensor to track speed and incline when the treadmill does that for you? Well, there are a few reasons, though most walkers and runners won’t need a device like this. The Runn Smart Treadmill Sensor is for specific scenarios. For one, it can help you check the accuracy of your treadmill.

My top reason for getting the Runn Sensor is to convert your treadmill to a smart treadmill for compatibility with third-party apps. One of my favorite treadmill apps is Zwift, which is free for runners! Zwift has virtual running courses where you will encounter other Zwift runners and cyclists. I use Zwift to schedule virtual meetups with my sister. Since your Zwift pace is your real pace, you need some kind of sensor to transmit your speed.

You can also use the Runn sensor to record your workouts. I wish my Garmin watch recorded the speed and incline on the treadmill, but that doesn’t work even with Bluetooth machines. This sensor is a solution.

Coros Pace 3

Areas For Improvement:

  • Heart rate monitor could be better
  • Users have reported issues with the barometer
Coros is a rising star in the running space. Garmin tends to be pretty popular, but I think new runners who aren’t already attached to Garmin should check Coros out. The price makes a lot of sense, and you still get a lot of the same features that you would find on a Garmin watch. While you don’t need the GPS feature for your treadmill running, other metrics like heart rate and training load may be useful.

The Pace 3 is also compatible with the Coros Pod 2, which is a running dynamics pod. This pod improves your watch’s accuracy on the treadmill and indoor tracks. Additionally, the Coros Pace 3 has a lot of different sport profiles, so you can track your other indoor activities, like indoor biking, strength, indoor rowing, and more.

While the Coros Pace 3 is a good beginner watch, the heart rate measurement is intermittent instead of continuous. The benefit is the increased battery life, but it may not lend itself to heart rate-based training quite as well as other running watches.

Areas For Improvement:

  • Large display may feel bulky to some runners
  • Not all metrics are as reliable as others
I have been loyal to the Garmin Forerunner series for over a decade. The 970 is the newest iteration of the most expensive and high-tech option within the series. I currently have the 965, but there are a few features I really wish I had from the 970: the smart alarm and the flashlight. Overall, I think the top reason for choosing such an expensive watch is to have an excellent battery.

The training metrics are great, but it’s really hard for a runner to use all of the data this watch offers. For example, I only recently started tracking my training load and heart rate variability. These metrics are incredibly useful. Metrics I struggle to use are the endurance score and the hill score. I just don’t factor them into my training often. So keep in mind that having a lot of data is cool, but you might not always have a purpose for it.

Garmin does a good job of letting me track my data over time in the Garmin Connect app. Though there is a premium version of this app now, I still get a lot of use out of the free version. I like adding my upcoming races and planning routes. The ability to create workouts and send them to my device is also very, very helpful.

I endorse the entire Garmin Forerunner series, but I think the length of the races and runs you are doing will determine what kind of watch you need. For marathon training, I like the 970 the most.

Runners get injured at terribly high rates. I often joke (because if we don’t joke, we will cry) about how getting injured as a runner is not an ‘if’ but a ‘when.’ The Lever Movement System supports up to 45 lbs of body weight to help you keep your mileage up while reducing injury risk or returning from injury. It’s a device I wish I had had throughout my career.

While the Lever System Movement is over $1k, it’s significantly more affordable than anti-gravity treadmills, which is the technology it replicates. Spending one-thirtieth of the cost for a similar effect is spectacular. You just have to wear funny shorts—then the Lever Movement System lifts you up, reducing your weight by up to 45 lbs to reduce the impact of each step.

More than anything, runners want to return to running after injury. With Lever, you can get back to running without having to worry if it’s too soon. It makes the transition between not running and running more gradual.

While the Lever Movement System may be too expensive and unrealistic for many runners, it’s a great investment for runners prone to injury.

What to Consider When Buying Treadmill Accessories

You probably don’t need every single treadmill accessory that exists. Instead, we recommend starting off with just a water bottle. Then, discover what your needs are as you train. If your treadmill doesn’t have a fan, a fan is a great addition. Treadmill mats are also a good accessory to have because they protect your floor and treadmill.

We listed more advanced and optional accessories for the high-tech runner with specific needs. The goal of these accessories is to make your training better and smoother flowing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treadmill accessories do I need?

You should only purchase the treadmill accessories that your treadmill does not already have, or the accessories that you need to meet your training goals. The three accessories I consider must-haves are a water bottle, treadmill mat, and fan.

Can you use any heart rate monitor with a treadmill?

Not all treadmills support every heart rate monitor. Some treadmills have Bluetooth, some have 5kHz, and some do not pair with any heart rate monitors. Before purchasing a heart rate monitor, ensure it is compatible with your treadmill.

Are treadmill heart rate monitors accurate?

No, treadmill EKG pulse grips are typically not very accurate. It’s also difficult to maintain good contact with the heart rate monitors while exercising. I recommend using a wearable monitor that’s compatible with your treadmill instead.
